What happened to winter

After the excitement of some early, heavy snowfall, the days have been mild and sunny. All to the detriment of our local ski area, as well as the snow sculpture of a bear that Melia and I built one afternoon.

It’s Not All About Work…

Cousins at the Coffee ShopThis is one of those times when a cup of coffee isn’t just a cup of coffee.    It’s an excuse to ham it up as would-be cafe performers.  Now that my son has cut his hair, you can tell which one ISN’T a girl.

He really didn’t seem to mind being asked, “And what would the little girl like to drink?”.  His explanation for why he decided to cut his hair: “I want to see my friends again.”

His grandparents are happy about it.

Soccer-to-Skiing

SCAN0004This Saturday marks the last game of Melia’s first ‘competitive’ league soccer season.  Her team has yet to score a goal, but then, it turns out the other teams from Denver and Colorado Springs are MUCH bigger (most of our team is in the 6th grade) and has had more playing experience.  Three practices a week plus  travelling every-other-weekend for out of town games has been a bit tiring, but you don’t hear any complaints from Melia!   She lives for soccer, and spends time on YouTube watching  worldclass soccer players displaying their footwork and juggling moves.

On the other hand, Chaz has been looking forward to ski season since the first real snow fell last week.  We got an inch or so of the white stuff last night, and the mountains are beginning to look as if they will justify his hopes for an early opening at Monarch.   We’ve been season pass holders for so many years that it’s embarrassing to continue using the same pictures on our passcards.  In fact, someone made a mistake and inserted Chaz’ first ski pass picture rather than using the one he took last year.  He looks like the 5 year old he was when he began learning how to ski.    Isn’t it odd how five years can seem such a long time to a 10 year old, and such a very short time for the 10-yo’s parents?

Telecommuting

IMG00083The change from working in the (same) office for over 14 years to telecommuting from home has so far been rewarding.  I get kisses from my kids every morning before they leave for school, and (if I’m lucky) a chorus of shouts and sounds of foraging for food when they return.  It is the best set of bookends I’ve ever had to my work day.
